Hours after the U.S. Senate Ethics Committee formally admonished Illinois Democratic Sen. Roland Burris, Republican gubernatorial candidate Adam Andrzejewski has jumped on the reprimand as a "blunt reminder" of the state's corrupt political culture.
"The news that Sen. Burris may not be technically in violation of the law is certainly not a reason to breathe a sigh of relief here in Illinois,” Andrzejewski said in a statement. “Instead it validates more than ever how this state is in dire need of reform."
Andrzejewski (pronounced an-gee-EF-ski) is one of seven GOP candidates in the governor's race against incumbent Democrat Pat Quinn. A political outsider, he founded For the Good of Illinois, a nonprofit that focuses on government accountability and transparency.
"We need to crack down on insider dealings in government and create greater accountability by providing for a Recall Amendment," he said. "The political culture in Illinois has been, and still is, one of corruption rather than one of collaboration."
Quinn also supports a recall amendment. During this week's debate against chief Democratic rival Dan Hynes, Quinn said such an amendment would keep governors "on our toes."
