We've not seen the worst of Chicago's winter yet, and Cook County Commissioner Forrest Claypool thinks Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan is paying attention to the Weather Channel.
At a press conference this morning, Claypool said voters are being "manipulated" by politicians who set the primary election date for Feb. 2.
"It is the bitterest, coldest, iciest day of the year to discourage people from voting," he said, calling Illinois' voting system "rigged." The election that matters most, he said, happens in the primary season, not November.
"People have to understand that they're being taken for suckers," Claypool said, expressing the need for more independent and progressive candidates.
"They need to come out and vote, and not just come out and vote, and not just vote on the coldest day of the year, but show the party bosses like Mike Madigan (and) all the way down to the ward level that their votes are going to be taken for granted," he said.
Claypool's comments came as he and Commissioner Larry Suffredin endorsed Jesus "Chuy" Garcia in his race to claim incumbent Joseph Mario Moreno's 7th District seat.
