Cook County Board President Todd Stroger yesterday got the enthusiastic backing of Rep. Bobby Rush, who said Stroger’s handling of the county’s budget and health system should earn him reelection.

Speaking in front of a cadre of ministers, union leaders, community activists and other Stroger supporters at the Crown Plaza in West Town, Rush said Stroger has kept the county solvent.

And, “Despite all the firepower he’s taken over the last four years, Todd Stroger is still standing,” Rush said.

Stroger, energized while speaking to his backers, thanked Rush for his support. He urged the black community to unite behind one candidate, quoting the Bible: “A house divided shall not stand.”

He touted his management of the county budget, calling it “a budget that was crafted to help people.”

Preckwinkle wins Schakowsky’s backing

Rep. Jan Schakowsky lent her endorsement to Alderman Toni Preckwinkle Monday, saying she’s a proven coalition builder.

"As alderman for almost 20 years, she has successfully represented a diverse constituency with independence, transparency and accountability. Toni is the only progressive in this race, the only reformer. She is the only person who can end the status quo and bring real, responsible change to Cook County. I have worked with Toni throughout the years and, as my colleague Congressman Gutierrez has said, she is the person we need at the helm of the County Board,” Schakowsky said in a statement released by the Preckwinkle campaign.

Preckwinkle got the endorsements of both the Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune's today, as well as

Republican Roger Keats got the Trib's endorsement on that side of the aisle.

Maldonado endorses Brown

Alderman Roberto Maldonado endorsed Clerk of Court Dorothy Brown last week. Maldonado, a former county commissioner, said Brown’s experience and commitment to transparency makes her the best candidate for president.

“As the first African American to hold the position as the Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County, Dorothy Brown has opened the doors for individuals and communities who previously never would have had a chance to participate in government and, for a over a decade, has successfully managed one of the largest unified court systems in the world,” he said in a statement released by the Brown campaign.
