Commissioners seek to make health board permanent

UPDATE: The item was referred to the health and hospitals committee. So no action was taken today.

Cook County commissioners will debate the wisdom of making the independent governing board of the Cook County Health and Hospitals System permanent during today’s board meeting.

A measure, introduced by Republican Commissioners Gregg Goslin, Tony Peraica, Peter Silvestri, Timothy Schneider and Liz Gorman and Democrats Larry Suffredin and Bridget Gainer, would make the board’s 2011 sunset date irrelevant.

Just what this means for County Board president candidate and independent board backer Toni Preckwinkle is unclear. One of her main campaign points is making the health board permanent. If commissioners go along with the measure, it could steal Preckwinkle’s fire.
