The Cook County Board may hire a p.r. agency to get the word out about a new foreclosure assistance program.

Approved in December, the program provides homeowners facing foreclosure with face-to-face mediation sessions with lenders. Homeowners can renegotiate their mortgages, lessening their burden.

At its meeting tomorrow, the board will vote on a contract that would pay Carolyn Grisko & Associates $160,000 to design and execute a community relations plan to inform Cook County residents about the foreclosure program. The PR agency would subcontract A. LaVelle Consulting Services to reach out to educational and civic groups.

Sales tax repeal is back

Commissioner Tony Peraica's measure to repeal the remainder of the county's sales tax hike will be discussed by the County Board's finance committee. Some commissioners believe the entire tax will be repealed by the November general election. Both candidates for County Board president, Democrat Toni Preckwinkle and Republican Roger Keats, are in favor of eliminating the tax hike.

Preckwinkle would reduce it over time. Keats says he'd move to repeal the hike on his first day of office.
