Chicago alderman criticized the Obama administration today for dragging its feet on immigration reform.
Alderman Danny Solis (25th) introduced a resolution at today's City Council meeting solidifying the council's commitment to immigration reform, as Solis and others prepare to go to Washington for an immigration-rights march on March 21.
The City Council in the past has supported a moratorium on raids and deportations that lead to the separation of families.
"It’s an issue that’s a disgrace, a national disgrace," Solis said.
"When people run on a platform that says at the end of the first year they’re going to put a plan in place and nothing’s done, that’s unacceptable," Alderman Ray Suarez (31st) said.
Alderman Roberto Maldonado (26th) complained that Obama, who has been bogged down by partisan fighting about health care reform, was dragging his feet on the issue.
"It is sad that 14 months after we elected a Democratic president, we are still begging President Barack Obama to do something to address immigration reform," Maldonado said.
Alderman Ed Smith (28th) said he expects Congress to come up with some plan for immigration reform, but said the complicated legislative process is slowing things down.
