Stroger, Brown, O’Brien tout weekend endorsements

Cook County Board President Todd Stroger and Clerk of Court Dorothy Brown scored more endorsements over the weekend, while Metropolitan Water Reclamation District President Terrence O'Brien worked on getting support from the Latino community.

Stroger got the backing of more than 20 south suburban mayor, including those from Country Club Hills, Glenwood, Steger, Riverdale, Harvey, Robbins, Burnham, Dolton, Phoenix, Lynwood, Ford Heights, Chicago Heights, Markham, Dixmoor, Hazel Crest, Calumet Park, Sauk Village and Hopkins Park.

Brown secured the endorsement of the Cook County Democratic Women.

O’Brien participated in a rally put on by North Side Latinos. He says expects to get significant support from Latinos on Feb. 2.

Preckwinkle’s new ad channels Ben Franklin

Telling viewers “a penny saved is a penny earned” and “you earned your pennies,” Alderman Toni Preckwinkle today unveiled a new campaign advertisement. In it she says she used to teach her students about Benjamin Franklin’s wisdom, and that same wisdom would guide her as County Board president.

The ad ends with a Franklin impersonator shaking hands with Preckwinkle.

Brown, Stroger expect TV time soon

Brown and Stroger both said last week they expect to begin running TV ads soon. Stroger told reporters Friday he expects to have an ad out this week. Brown was vague, but said she would take to the airwaves soon.

Stroger said he would spend wisely, though.

“In this campaign, I’m going to use every dollar the best way I can,” he said.

Stroger told Fox News Chicago Sunday that his ads were nearly ready to air.

He told Fox hosts Dane Placko and Jeff Goldblatt that he was frustrated with the lack of support from unions, and that his message is getting out to county voters. Many, he said, are surprised when they hear about some of the county's successes, like a balanced budget.

Tribune tells incumbents they're toast

Reform is in the air, or at least that’s what Chicago’s major daily newspapers are saying.

Both the Tribune and Sun-Times endorsed Alderman Toni Preckwinkle over incumbent Todd Stroger for County Board president.

And in endorsements for county commissioner released today and yesterday, the Tribune endorsed just four incumbents who are being challenged in the primaries.

Maybe this truly is the winter of our discontent, when voters, fed up with shenanigans from the Governor’s mansion on down tell the politicians, “enough is enough.”

The only incumbents the Tribune supports are Larry Suffredin (13), Gregg Goslin (14), Tony Peraica (16) and Liz Gorman (17). It made no mention of Commissioners Bridget Gainer, John Daley and Peter Silvestri, who are running unopposed in the primary. It backed Illinois State Rep. John Fritchey in the race for Forrest Claypool’s 12th District seat.
