So, it appears that mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel's seemingly unlimited political power does have bounds. Three of the 10 candidates he supported in aldermanic runoffs yesterday went down in flames.
Now we know: A nod from Rahm is not the same as ... say ... a nod from Mayor Daley. But give the new guy a couple of decades to settle in and then we'll see how he's doing.
Meanwhile, seven Emanuel candidates triumphed yesterday in what amounts to a significant remaking of the City Council. Here's the results:
- 6th Ward: Roderick Sawyer notches incumbent Freddrenna Lyle
- 15th Ward: Incumbent Toni Foulkes creams challenger Raymond Lopez
- 16th Ward: Incumbent Joann Thompson beats Hal Baskin
- 17th Ward: Incumbent Latasha Thomas tops David Moore
- 20th Ward: Incumbent Willie Cochran beats Che "Rhymefest" Smith. Smith vows a challenge over the 700-vote margin
- 24th Ward: Michael Chandler wallops incumbent Sharon Denise Dixon
- 25th Ward: Incumbent Danny Solis edges out Temoc Morfin
- 36th Ward: Challenger Nicholas Sposato beats John Rice
- 41st Ward: Mary O'Connor beats Maurita Gavin.
- 43rd Ward: Michele Smith tops Tim Egan
- 45th Ward: John Arena wins against John Garrido
- 46th Ward: James Cappleman beats Molly Phelan
- 50th Ward: Debra Silverman trounces incumbent Berny Stone
