Marking the start of what is expected to be contentious contract negotiations, the Chicago Teachers Union made its first round of demands to the Chicago Board of Education.

A Chicago Board of Education meeting came to a sudden halt Wednesday when a raucous group of protesters from the Chicago Teachers Union, Occupy Chicago and other organizations erupted into a chorus of chants denouncing board members. It was the first board meeting since Chicago Public Schools announced a series of closings, consolidations and turnarounds.
The Chicago Teachers Union has filed suit against the Chicago Board of Education, claiming the board is illegally interviewing teacher applicants about their feelings about collective bargaining.
Charter schools also will be given financial incentives for adding 90 minutes of instruction this year. The Chicago Board of Education on Wednesday approved the program, which matches an offer already extended to neighborhood schools.
