County Board votes to cut sales tax

Cook County commissioners today voted to repeal the county’s controversial sales tax by one-half percent, and President Todd Stroger immediately vowed to veto the measure, though he would not say when a veto would come.

Commissioners voted 12 to five to cut the tax, and shot down an amendment that would repeal the entire one-percent tax. If sustained, the rollback would go into effect next July. Read more...

Sales tax storylines

As Cook County commissioners meet today to discuss the unpopular 1 percent sales tax they have unsuccessfully tried to repeal twice in the last six months, several story lines are at play, not the least of which is how County Board Todd Stroger will respond.

Brown confident in winning Davis' endorsement

With local Democrats vying for the endorsement of U.S. Rep. Danny Davis in the race for Cook County Board president, at least one is fully confident she’ll get it.

Clerk of Courts Dorothy Brown’s spokesman Toure Muhammad says she fully expects to get the endorsement of Davis, who dropped out of the race Monday. Read more...

County candidates begin campaigns with flurry of challenges

Yesterday was the final day for candidates running for office in Cook County to challenge opponents’ petitions or withdraw from the race.

The biggest news, of course, was U.S. Rep. Danny Davis, who backed out of the race for Todd Stroger's job, citing the need for party unity. Then a flurry of high-profile challenges emerged, most notably with Clerk of Courts Dorothy Brown challenging the petitions of County Board President Todd Stroger. Read more...
