Metra fare increases begin Wednesday

Starting Wednesday, Metra tickets will increase an average of 25 percent. The agency says the fare increase will help cover a budget deficit caused by a spike in diesel fuel prices, higher insurance premiums and other costs.

Aldermen Mell, Austin in racially-charged tiff

Alderman Richard Mell nearly came to blows last week with Budget Committee Chairman Carrie Austin (34th) during a disagreement over redistricting. In language laced with profanity, sources said, Austin accused Mell of being a racist and treating African-American aldermen like “plantation n------.” A police officer was summoned to restore order, and Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s City Council floor leader reportedly told Mell to shut up because he was exacerbating racial tensions.

Illinois House and Senate at odds on tax breaks for CME, Sears

The Illinois Senate voted Tuesday to approve a tax-break package designed to keep Chicago's financial exchanges and Sears Holdings Corp. from leaving the state, but the fate of the deal remained in question. The Senate voted 36-18 to pass its version of the tax-relief package, sending the measure to the House, which was poised to vote on its own plan, offering less to the working poor and individual taxpayers.
