Quinn renews call to raise taxes, protect services in State of the State address

Gov. Pat Quinn renewed his call to raise taxes today, saying that the state needs more income if it's going to overcome a crippling budget deficit.

"I do believe we need more revenue," Quinn told the Illinois General Assembly. "We're still short," despite securing federal stimulus money, cutting costs and using what he called "strategic" borrowing to fill funding gaps in the state's budget. Read more...

With shared focus on spending cuts, Republicans highlight differences

Republican gubernatorial candidates expressed unanimous support for spending cuts during a debate this morning while trying to distinguish themselves with a spate of ideas on trimming the state budget.

Much of the rhetoric during the event, hosted by the City Club of Chicago, focused on which candidate would be most likely to defeat the Democratic nominee and end a drought of Republican leadership at the state level. Read more...
