Responding to flood of veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with post-traumatic stress disorder, the Cook County Board of Commissioners yesterday approved a resolution to ease soldiers’ transitions home with a series of programs to treat PTSD.
The resolution, introduced by Commissioner Edwin Reyes, establishes PTSD screening events in all 17 county districts at National Guard Armories, where available. At these screening and benefit fairs, veterans will have the opportunity to meet with prospective employers, develop their resume, get information on veteran benefits and get follow up treatment for mental illnesses. Monday is the deadline for Cook County Clerk David Orr to submit ballots to be printed for the Feb. 2 primary, though with some outstanding hearings, it looks like that deadline is blown. Already a number of petition challenges have been overturned, chief among them Clerk of Courts Dorothy Brown’s challenge to County Board President Todd Stroger.
