In September 2009, Jaye Williams became Cook County’s chief financial officer. She’s relied on a nearly 30-year corporate banking career to implement new technologies and processes. Williams has recently come under scrutiny for her $230,000 salary, which is higher than salaries paid to chief financial officers at many other large local governments.

It’s unlikely we’ve heard the last of the sales tax debate. But for now, the sales tax is staying right where it is.
Commissioner Tony Peraica’s bid to axe the remaining half-percent of the 2008 sales tax hike was defeated by county commissioners at Tuesday’s board meeting. Commissioners in the finance committee voted 11-6 against the measure.
Voting nay were Commissioners William Beavers, Jerry Butler, John Daley, Bridget Gainer, Joseph Mario Moreno, Joan Patricia Murphy, Edwin Reyes, Deborah Sims, Robert Steele and Larry Suffredin. Read more...
Though the old Cook County Hospital building sits empty, surrounded by a chain-link fence, preservation groups are working to ensure it won't stay that way for much longer.
“Whenever you lose something of that historical importance, you’re losing a part of your history,” says Jonathan Fine, executive director of Preservation Chicago.
