Some surprises from the Sweet 16 of Clout

The first round of voting in the Current's Sweet 16 of Clout has wrapped up, and there were a couple of big surprises on the winners list. 

Michael Madigan walloped Ed Burke 24-6, and Lisa Madigan trounced Dorothy Brown by a similar margin. That sets up a battle royale in the round of eight between the two Madigans.   Read more...

Rahm Emanuel: Protests over school closings ‘noise associated with change’


Mayor Rahm Emanuel said Thursday he’s sensitive to the “noise associated with change” caused by the decision to close or turn around 17 underperforming schools, but he said he’s more concerned about the deafening “silence of failure.”

Board of Education OKs shake-ups for 17 schools


Chicago School Board members Wednesday unanimously agreed to close or phase out seven flagging schools and to turn around a record 10 others, only to be greeted with cries of “Shame on you!” and “Rubber Stamp!’’ Although not every plan for every school was “perfect,’’ School Board Vice President Jesse Ruiz explained later, the vote marked an opportunity “to do something today for our children.”
