Board of Education OKs shake-ups for 17 schools

Chicago School Board members Wednesday unanimously agreed to close or phase out seven flagging schools and to turn around a record 10 others, only to be greeted with cries of “Shame on you!” and “Rubber Stamp!’’ Although not every plan for every school was “perfect,’’ School Board Vice President Jesse Ruiz explained later, the vote marked an opportunity “to do something today for our children.”

Obama coming to Chicago Wednesday to raise cash through concert, parties

Daley to address alderman appointments at press conference

Mayor Richard M. Daley is holding a press conference at 3 p.m. to discuss the City Council’s two vacant positions.

While it’s unclear what exactly he’ll be discussing, he has until tomorrow to name a replacement for former Alderman Manny Flores, who resigned his 1st Ward seat in January to take a position with Gov. Pat Quinn’s administration. Read more...
