So, it appears that mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel's seemingly unlimited political power does have bounds. Three of the 10 candidates he supported in aldermanic runoffs yesterday went down in flames.
Now we know: A nod from Rahm is not the same as ... say ... a nod from Mayor Daley. But give the new guy a couple of decades to settle in and then we'll see how he's doing.

A former Republican candidate for Cook County board president is setting his sights on the city.
John Garrido, a Chicago policeman who lost to Roger Keats in the Republican primary, announced Saturday he would run for 45th Ward alderman.
"As a long time ward resident, homeowner and veteran Chicago Police Lieutenant, I’ve regularly seen the negative impact self-​​serving politicians have on our community," Garrido said on his website. "Rather than represent our best interests, they too often become consumed with power and greed. As a result, we the community suffer while their friends and family prosper. This has to change!" Roger Keats predicts his first day in office will be a busy one.
Speaking to the City Club of Chicago this afternoon, Keats, the Republican nominee for Cook County Board president, outlined an aggressive initiation that includes slashing the budget, firing political appointees, letting loose a cadre of inspectors general and handing over documents to reporters.

Roger Keats really does like Toni Preckwinkle. Honest.
The Republican nominee for Cook County Board President says she’s a nice lady who would be a better choice than Todd Stroger.
But, he says, “She’s part of ‘the club.’” Preckwinkle may tout her independence, Keats says, but she’s bankrolled by unions and will be supported by the state’s top Democrats come November. Keats, a former state senator himself, says that balances out her claims of independence. Read more...
