Sen. Mark Kirk has been upgraded to “fair” condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital a week after undergoing surgery for a stroke. “Senator Kirk’s recovery is continuing,” his neurosurgeon, Richard Fessler, said in a written statement. “He is alert, talking and responding well to questions.”

The night before he started experiencing stroke symptoms, Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) seemed happy and at ease, enjoying conversation, Miller Lite and a cheeseburger at the Billy Goat Tavern on Lower Michigan. He actually seemed to be relieved to be out of his car after a snail-paced six-hour drive through snowy interstates from Bloomington to Chicago.
U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) has had a stroke and underwent “successful” surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he is recovering, his office said Monday. His doctors said the ischemic stroke “will affect his ability to move his left arm and possibly his left leg.”

Sen. Mark Kirk and Rep. Mike Quigley are calling for a criminal probe into a Homeland Security Inspector General’s investigation that Cook County misspent $45 million in federal funds. The money was part of Project Shield, which was intended to provide 128 municipalities with two vehicles capable of mobile data transmission, a WiFi hotspot and a tower camera.
