Alvarez: No special prosecutor needed in Koschman case

Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez will fight a Mount Prospect woman’s effort to have a special prosecutor appointed to investigate the homicide of her son, who died after being involved in a drunken confrontation with Richard J. “R.J.” Vanecko, a nephew of former mayor Richard M. Daley.

New commissioner wants to ‘re-envision what libraries look like’

Chicago built 59 new libraries during the 22-year reign of former Mayor Richard M. Daley. The question now is, what to do with those buildings in a 24/7 digital world where, as Mayor Rahm Emanuel put it, “newspapers are on iPhones and Amazon is your neighborhood bookstore.” Incoming libraries commissioner Brian Bannon says it’s time to “re-envision what libraries look like, both in the physical space as well as in the digital space.”

Emanuel Courts Aldermen With Compromises

Despite his reputation as a hard-charging and foul-mouthed politician, it’s a 10-letter c-word –compromise – that has become a buzzword of rookie Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s administration. After tweaking his 2012 budget to secure unanimous approval from the City Council in November, compromise was the word of the day at City Hall on Tuesday also. Emanuel made 11th-hour revisions to his proposals to tighten regulations on protesters and cabbies, both of which cleared aldermanic committees and could receive final approval at Wednesday’s council meeting.
