Union says Claypool misrepresents issues in CTA talks

The leadership of the CTA workers union said agency President Forrest Claypool should "put up or shut up" when it comes to negotiating workers' contracts.

Mayor Daley to intervene in CTA service cuts

With less than 48 hours until CTA service cuts are scheduled to take effect, Mayor Daley is stepping in to the contemptuous fray.

Daley will bring the heads of the CTA's two biggest unions, Amalgamated Transit Union locals 241 and 308, as well as officials from the CTA, to a last-minute negotiating session in City Hall at 4 p.m. today.

"I have asked leaders of the unions representing CTA employees and CTA officials to come to my office so that we can -- I hope -- reach an agreement to prevent bus and train service cuts from going into effect this Sunday," Daley said in a statement. Read more...

With union talks in stalemate, CTA starts warning riders of all-but-certain cuts

As the Chicago Transit Authority’s doomsday approaches and negotiations with its unions remain gridlocked, the agency has started notifying riders of impending service cuts.

“The days of preparing for the storm have passed — we are now in its midst,” CTA President Richard Rodriguez said at the agency’s monthly board meeting today. “We want customers to have information as early as possible so that they can plan their travels based on the new schedules.” Read more...

"L" union accuses CTA of scare tactics

The union representing Chicago Transit Authority "L" operators is accusing the agency of employing scare tactics as the two sides negotiate budget cutbacks.

The CTA has issued issued federally mandated notices informing about 2,000 unionized employees that they will be laid off on Feb. 7, says Robert Kelly, president Amalgamated Transit Union Local 308.

But the CTA says it plans to lay off only 1,067 as it cuts services to close a budget gap. Read more...

The CTA's construction catch-22

The Chicago Transit Authority’s pitch for its newest big project sounds like a slam dunk.

The proposal is still taking shape, but its goal is to reconstruct the Red and Purple lines’ bridges, tracks and stations.

Those are nine miles of heavily used “L” stations and tracks, and its bridges are deteriorated and costly to maintain, officials say. Read more...
