Garrido gets FOP backing in Republican race

Republican candidate for Cook County Board President John Garrido this week picked up the backing of the Fraternal Order of Police, giving the first-time candidate a boost in his primary race against Roger Keats.

Garrido, a lieutenant in the Chicago Police Department, says he is honored to have the support of his colleagues, and says the current county leadership has not done enough to support law enforcement. Read more...

Brown "cautiously" optimistic about sales tax rollback

Clerk of Court and candidate for county board president Dorothy Brown said yesterday she is "cautiously optimistic" about county commissioners' decision to roll back the county sales tax by half a percent.

She supports a smaller sales tax, saying taxpayers and businesses are struggling in the weak economy. But a statement from her campaign said she is skeptical about the roll back, since commissioners did not draw up plans to replace the lost revenue, estimated to be $32 million in 2010 and $188 million in 2011.
