Governor creates group to address education issues

The governor appointed a 25-member committee today that will be charged with strengthening the state's education system through a targeted $400 million in federal grant money.

Some of Chicago's prominent government officials were named to the committee, including Chicago Public Schools Chief Executive Officer Ron Huberman and City Clerk Miguel del Valle, who will chair the committee. Read more...

CPS to launch new literacy program

Chicago Public Schools unveiled a new literacy program yesterday aimed at improving the reading skills of students before they enter high school.

The program, called Read 180, will target students in Grade 6 through 8 who read below grade level, so their transition to high school is smoother. Read more...
