When the Chicago City Council began its re-districting process last fall, the city was braced for a showdown between the Latino and black caucuses. What it was not expecting, however, was the persistence of a tiny band of Polish-American activists with a long list of complaints.
Ten days after bragging about going 24 hours without a homicide in Chicago, Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Monday confronted a more sobering statistic: the murder rate is up 53.8 percent from the same period a year ago.
The Chicago Public Schools watchdog is investigating why people have been paid to speak out in support of school closings. The school district's Inspector General said they're looking to verify whether that's true, and if so - if it's legal.

CPS Chief Education Officer Jean-Claude Brizard announced the award this morning at Jahn Elementary School on the North Side. Brizard was accompanied by the congressman representing the school's neighborhood, Mike Quigley (D-5), who worked to secure the funds for CPS.
Thaddeus Jimenez was just 13 when he was arrested for the 1993 murder of an older teenager on Chicago's Northwest Side, but after serving more than 16 years in prison, he was exonerated and released from prison in May 2009.
