Preckwinkle fires Cook Co. comptroller over tax reporting flap

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle fired Comptroller Constance Kravitz, whose office was responsible for a $90 million overstatement of tax revenues. Kravitz was hired by former County Board President Todd Stroger in September 2009.

Preckwinkle defends bodyguard raises

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle defended pay raises she gave to her three bodyguards while the county has a $315 million budget deficit. Preckwinkle said her predecessor, Todd Stroger, had four to five  bodyguards. But she stressed that she cut the size of the detail, which saves money for the taxpayers.

Despite huge shortfall, Preckwinkle has no regrets on sales tax cut

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle said Thursday she doesn’t regret pushing for next year’s slight rollback of the county’s sales tax even though the revenue losses are contributing to a forecasted $300 million-plus budget deficit in 2012.

Stroger appointee Rupert Graham quits as Cook highway chief

The superintendent of Cook County’s Highway Department, long seen as a dumping ground for waste and patronage hires, is stepping down.

Rupert Graham, named to head the department by former County Board President Todd Stroger in 2007, will leave Aug. 1. Officials say he's departing for personal reasons, thought current Board President Toni Preckwinkle wouldn't elaborate on the move.

County Inspector General: No fraud tied to Stroger accounting blunder

It may have been a big blunder, but there was nothing nefarious going on when Cook County double counted $90 million in revenue during the last fiscal year under former County Board President Todd Stroger.

That’s according to Cook County Inspector General Patrick Blanchard, who released a report on his investigation in to the matter yesterday.

“The evidence developed during the course of this investigation does not support a contention that Cook County employees intended to commit accounting fraud,” the report says.
