Dart: Virtually Impossible to Locate More than 12K Unclaimed Bodies

Since 1980, more than 12,000 indigent and unclaimed bodies have been buried in mass graves at Homewood Memorial Gardens. Sheriff Tom Dart says it's virtually impossible to figure out where any one individual is located - meaning some crimes may never be solved, and many families may never have the solace of finding their loved one.

Sheriff wants changes to Cook County ordinance

Citing concerns over the potential release of dangerous felons who are in the country illegally, Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart has been pushing for changes to a controversial county ordinance that requires law enforcement to ignore federal requests to hold illegal immigrants who are arrested for other crimes.

Cook Sheriff Tom Dart slammed for mulling release of inmates

Supporters of tougher immigration enforcement are criticizing Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart for seeking legal options enabling the county’s massive jail to quit holding some inmates wanted for immigration violations.

Dart told WBEZ last week his department was looking for a way to end its blanket compliance with Immigration and Customs Enforcement requests that detainees be held for deportation proceedings.

U.S. Attorney, sheriff move forward on inmates' rights oversight

The United States’ Attorney’s office announced today announced the resolution of a long-standing lawsuit against the Cook County Sheriff’s Office that sought to remedy a series of constitutional rights violations.

A year-long investigation beginning in 2007 found systematic violations of inmates’ rights in which correctional officers used excessive force, inmates were not adequately protected from one another, a lack of medical and mental health care and inadequate fire safety and sanitation.

Sheriff Tom Dart agreed in March to institute a number of oversight provisions, effectively freeing the sheriff’s department from the so-called Harrington and Duran decrees that monitored overcrowding and mental health of inmates. As part of today's agreement, an additional 600 officers will be hired. Read more...
