County looks to end court monitoring of jail conditions

Cook County could soon be free from a pair of decades-long decrees that require judicial monitoring of detainees at the Cook County Jail.

Commissioners today approved a set of measures that will eliminate the so-called Duran and Harrington decrees, which monitor overcrowding and mental health of the jail population. Read more...

With Burr Oak in mind, Dart introduces cemetery complaint portal

When the displaced bodies were discovered at Burr Oak Cemetery last year, it came as a shock to community members and government officials alike.

Debate raises cost-cutting, hiring issues

Candidates for Cook County Board President made their cases last night during a debate hosted by ABC7 at the television station’s downtown studio.

In the first televised debate, President Todd Stroger defended the controversial sales tax hike, saying again it helped sustain the Cook County Health and Hospitals System. But his opponents, Clerk of Courts Dorothy Brown, Metropolitan Water Reclamation District President Terrence O’Brien and Alderman Toni Preckwinkle all vowed to repeal it. New ingredient of choice for locked up boozemeisters: Ketchup

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart says his jail guards, in addition to watching for contraband and violence, are now on the lookout for ... ketchup.
