Their absentee records are among worst in U.S. House— U.S. Reps. Bobby Rush and Luis Gutierrez of Chicago have racked up so many absences from the House floor that their voting records are among the worst in Congress.

Federal court pushes back congressional candidate filing while Illinois map in dispute

A federal judge has moved back the filing schedule for Illinois congressional candidates to late December while deliberations continue on a lawsuit challenging the state’s new U.S. House district boundaries.

Campaign finance reports keep candidates' cash flow in check

Candidates for the U.S. House had to file a lot of paperwork over the weekend--third quarter campaign finance reports were due. Recent redistricting  could generate a lot of tough primary elections in Illinois this year. New political boundaries mean new political matchups--and while the money was flowing in, it is also flowing out.

A detailed look at Kirk's tax returns

U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk released his 2009 tax return on Friday. It was an opportunity for reporters to examine the congressman's income, and his allegiance to Uncle Sam.

As I reported last week, Kirk released the return partly as a challenge to Alexi Giannoulias, who filed for an extension on his taxes. Giannoulias' campaign has not released a copy of the extension papers or any preliminary tax information, or elaborated on why he requested one.

But I wanted to get beyond the politics and dig into the tax returns themselves. Read more...

Kirk calls for more money to investigate Illinois corruption, responds to Giannoulias on Goldman

U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk this afternoon called for additional federal resources to stem corruption in the state and especially Northern Illinois.

Kirk, a Republican, is proposing a bill called the Public Integrity Anti-Corruption Act, that would authorize $25 million more to the Department of Justice to investigate and prosecute public corruption.

Although Kirk voted against President Barack Obama's federal stimulus plan, he said he supports the use of stimulus dollars for his proposal. He said that while federal officials did not request additional support, the bill would help the state overcome its reputation for double-dealing. Read more...
