Cohen, expected to announce run for governor, is a no-show

Is it hype?

Earlier this week, former Republican comptroller candidate William J. Kelly told me that Scott Lee Cohen would be the featured speaker at the first meeting of the new Reform Chicago Now group.

Cohen, who dropped his nomination for lieutenant governor, was widely speculated to announce an independent run for governor at the meeting, and Kelly wasn't denying the rumors. Read more...

Signs point to Cohen gov bid

As speculation builds about a possible independent run for governor by disgraced lieutenant governor candidate Scott Lee Cohen, we're hearing that a speech Cohen's due to make tonight "is going to affect the election this year."

That's the word from William J. Kelly, a former Republican comptroller candidate who then founded Reform Chicago Now.

Kelly declined to confirm whether Cohen would announce a new campaign at the group's first meeting tonight. Cohen could not be reached immediately. Read more...

Kelly: Chicago's Convention Problem Isn't Unions. It's a Blago Appointee

Pointing to lost contracts for conventions in Chicago, Republican Illinois comptroller candidate William J. Kelly is calling for the resignation of Juan Ochoa, chief executive of the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority.

The authority has come under fire recently after several organizations pulled out of negotiations to hold conventions in the city.

In just November, both the Society of Plastics Industry Inc. and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society announced they were holding upcoming conventions elsewhere, and officials at the National Restaurant Association said  they were considering a similar move. Read more...

Nielsen to Kelly: "You're Drunk"

He wants you to want him.

For William J. Kelly, Republican candidate for Illinois comptroller, just listening to Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen wasn't enough.

Nielsen, an investor in Chicago's Piece Brewery & Pizzeria, was in town this weekend for live-band karaoke at the New Haven-style pizza joint (a Current staff favorite, by the way). Read more...
